An ancient Japanese tradition holds that an object that is broken can be made stronger and more beautiful than before by mending it with gold, and this is the metaphor Claire Pennington applies to herself in the journey described in A Gold-Mended Life. A Gold-Mended Life is about baby boomers and older persons with attitude who aren’t ready to exchange life and love for an afghan and a plate of cookies, whose smarts and sexuality can be envied, and who will not submit to the myth that aging is a disease, where you sit around stringing beads in heaven’s waiting room. Talk about a late bloomer-- Claire is a sixty-year-old mother of three, newly separated, and giving her "stagnant quo" life a jolt by getting her first job in decades and taking her graying hair back to college and into counseling. If love is work, she and her husband failed to get the job done, and now Claire finds herself in a youth-worshipping society determined to "mend" her fractured life. As she evolves, she meets Edith, an eighty-year-old snorkeling sage who models courageous aging and probes difficult questions-- how does a death not learned from become a wasted death, and does death get easier with practice? She also befriends Cedric, a gay man with a warm sense of humor who longs for a friendship family. In her new job at a senior center, she advocates for the rights of seniors, including one who is being abused by her adult child. Claire finds a lover, Scott, sixty-five, who despite erectile dysfunction, shows her the sensual art of full body sex without the enhancer. But just as Claire's life gets on track, her husband Ross comes back, full of regret and asking for forgiveness in the face of his cancer diagnosis. Claire faces a daunting choice; embracing her new life or healing her old one.

A GoldMended Life Carolyn Stegman 9780615709079 Books Reviews

As a mental health practitioner working with individuals, couples & families across the life cycle, I highly recommend this fictional account of folks who build their resiliency in the face of multiple types of adversity & inspire all of us to build empathy for self & others. The author imparts much useful & factual information, weaving these facts into the narrative of her characters' lives without sounding pedantic or preachy.
As one of her characters says "Mental health is renewed empathy for our lives; a vitality, which is quite the opposite of depression." At the conclusion of this book, readers will come away definitely feeling the opposite of depressed.
I am so glad this wonderful book was recommended to me! My favorite quotes from this book "Healthy relationships take great risk, if you don't want to grieve then don't love." AND "Whatever spark of life they once had, seemed to be flickering toward extinction". This book is for everyone who has parents and is a parent. It is a cautionary tale about marriage and growing older together, about women and their struggles with the aging process and most importantly, how we treat the elderly in this country.
A very important novel that should be read far and wide and I look forward to seeing it as a film as well. Congratulations Carolyn Stegman!
It's a good story about continuing to grow after 60. I particularly liked the character making new friends of the heart. Right up front the main character questions her self knowledge about what she wants from sex. She gets to experience a new partner after 60 and learns new ways to enjoy herself. Her problems of daily living are familiar and her solutions are inspirational.
funny, sad, insightful and a good read as well--I highly recommend Gold Mended Life. Carolyn Stegman writes with wit and sensitivity about the challenges, joys and continuing adventures of an aging baby boomer.
What a great read! This dialog is what I actually hear from my fellow baby boomers. The author doesn't pull her punches! She covers topics that we all encounter daily. Great book for those of us who live in the real world!
A Gold Mended Life presents thoughtful and insightful writing about all aspects of aging -- including relationships, sensuality, lifestyle, and inner reflections. While reading I had so many memories of challenges and times of growth in my lifetime of almost 70 years. The book brought smiles, moments of nostalgia, and tears of remembrances.
Enlightening look into aging & living!
